Mechanisms of Cognitive Fatigue in Continuous Social Media Browsing

Continuous social media browsing exposes users to rapid content changes, dense information, emotional messages, and repeated choices. Although browsing often feels easy, it places constant pressure on attention, working memory, judgment, and self-control. This paper examines the main mechanisms through which prolonged browsing produces cognitive fatigue. Rapid switching between unrelated posts breaks attention into short periods and makes stable focus harder to maintain. Large amounts of text, images, videos, and comments place pressure on working memory and lead to shallow processing. Unfinished thoughts and emotional reactions may remain active after users move to new content, creating cognitive residue. Browsing also requires many small decisions, including whether to watch, skip, like, share, or respond. These repeated choices may weaken judgment and make it harder to leave the platform. Emotional shifts, social comparison, negative content, and online conflict add further mental demands. Uncertain rewards and endless feeds encourage users to continue scrolling even after pleasure has declined and fatigue has appeared. The loss of natural stopping points also weakens time awareness and allows browsing to replace rest and sleep. The paper argues that cognitive fatigue develops through a cycle in which stimulation leads to overload, overload reduces self-control, and weaker control extends browsing. Clear browsing goals, fixed stopping points, fewer notifications, screen-free rest, and less demanding platform design may help reduce this fatigue.
