Abstract

This paper explores the multifaceted role of Weibo, China’s leading social media platform, in shaping the country’s international relations through digital diplomacy. Focusing on the intersection of soft power and crisis management, the study delves into the opportunities and challenges presented by Weibo diplomacy in the contemporary digital age.

The first section examines Weibo’s role as a catalyst for positive international sentiment, emphasizing its capacity for cultural showcasing, people-to-people connections, soft power projection, and real-time diplomacy. The second section explores Weibo’s impact on global narratives, highlighting strategic messaging, countering misinformation, diplomatic engagements, and crisis communication as key elements influencing how China is perceived on the global stage.

Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges associated with Weibo diplomacy, including managing online backlash, addressing information control concerns, and balancing perceptions of governmental influence. On the flip side, it explores opportunities such as enhanced cultural diplomacy, direct citizen diplomacy, real-time crisis management, and the synergy between traditional and digital diplomatic efforts.

In conclusion, the study emphasizes the dynamic nature of Weibo diplomacy and its potential to significantly contribute to China’s soft power and global influence. By carefully navigating challenges and leveraging opportunities, Weibo emerges as a pivotal tool in shaping a positive international image for China.
